Candle Wicks

The key to making the perfect candles to suit your style is finding the perfect candle supplies and the best way to combine them. And wicks are no exception, the right wick can make your candlemaking go more smoothly, but like everything else in making candles, it will require some experimentation.

There are mainly two different ways you can buy wicks:

Spools of Wicking

You can buy them in bulk on a spool, in doing this you can cut them to whatever size you please, but you must attach them to a metal tab with a wicker.

Pre-tabbed Wicks

Or you can purchase pre-tabbed wicks, which usually come in sizes best suited for making votives and other small container candles, but sometimes you can find longer ones for jar candles, too. With these wicks, you can usually just place these in a center of a container, then carefully pour the wax/fragrance/color mixture over it.

If you're concerned about whether your wicks are lead based or not, fear no more. The vast majority of wicks sold are cotton or zinc based. But if you're still worried, there's an easy way to test for it, just rub the center of a wick on a piece of paper, if a grey mark appears, then it is lead based.
