Decorating with and Making Oil Candles

Oil candles and oil lamps can be a really unique way to add to your home decor and they also make lovely holiday and housewarming gifts. Often you can find skillfully crafted handblown glass oil candles online, as many crafters really consider it an artwork.

If you're interested in making your own oil candles, here are the supplies you will need:

  • Liquid paraffin oil that is meant for oil candles (ONLY!)
  • Appropriate container (Some common ones are bottles and jars but granite and brass candle oil containers are also doable)
  • Thermal glass wick tube or eyelet
  • Oil candle wick
  • Adaptor ring (if needed)

First fill the glass container nearly full with liquid paraffin oil. Then place the wick in the glass tube until about 1/4 inch is over the rim of the glass tube - this will support the wick in the container, then place the wick/tube in the center of the glass container to where the top is just below the holder. The glass tube should allow some airflow between it and the container, otherwise pressure will build upmay cause fires. Don't light for at about ten minutes, giving time for the wick to absorb the oil all the way to the top.

Be sure to use caution when burning any candle, but especially oil candles as they can easily spill! Also be sure to only use oil meant for oil candles, other fuels can cause dangerous fires! Never leave any burning candles unattended.
