Lavender: A Popular Candle Scent with Calming Effects
Lavender is one of the most popular candle scents on the market, partly due to the relaxing effects the fragrance of its oil. Lavender essential oil comes from the lavender plant (Lavendula angustifolia) which is a flowering evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region and it has been widely used for years for its therapeutic effects. Romans used it in their baths and it is still widely used across the world, externally and internally, to treat many ailments, including insomnia and sunburns.
Lavender has been closely studied in recent years, and the results across the board show that the lavender fragrance is calming, helps promote healthier sleep, and relieves anxiety.
In one study published in The Lancet, four nursing home patients found that they slept longer and more soundly when the room was filled with a lavender fragrance. Another study published in 1991, where researchers tracked brain wave measurements in participants who inhaled lavender oil, found that the lavender scent could promote a level of sedation and relaxation comparable to certain prescription medications.
Although more research is needed, many therapists and even esteemed members of the medical community advise people to use lavender to relieve nervous tension and even lift mild depression.
