Give a Handmade Candle This Year
I'm not much of a crafter myself, until recently I only dabbled in crocheting. Despite that, the thought of giving handmade gifts always appealed to me.
And why wouldn't it? There's nothing like opening a gift that was made by a loved one, it's something one can truly cherish and save. I always wanted to be the giver of some lovely handmade items, but my sweaters ended up crooked, and I simply didn't have any other craft honed.
That is, until a few years ago. I've always loved candles, and one year my husband suggested that I make my own candles. At first it seemed preposterous, I hadn't the slightest clue about where to start, and frankly, it sounded too complicated - what with melting and mixing and all.
Melting and mixing... wait a minute... that sounds a lot like cooking. And you know what? It actually is as simple as cooking... and also like cooking, it's getting the right recipe down that's the hard part.
See, once you get the right candle supplies, and some beginning candle making instructions, you're on your way. And once you get the melting temperature, etc., down, you just have to come up with a fragrance/color combination that you like.
That's what I did, or rather, I tried to come up with color combinations that my gift recipients would like. This made my candles even more personal, they were made by me, and they were scented with fragrances I thought the recipients would like.
Each year that I make candles as gifts, it really does feel good, and I'm glad that I came across a craft this fun and easy.
So this year, consider making your own candles as gifts, just be sure to follow safety guidelines (not overheating wax, wearing goggles, working near a fire extinguisher), for an extra personal touch this season.
