A Guide to Gel Candle Supplies

Making gel candles can be a lot of fun, and homemade gel candles make unique and creative gifts. But where to begin? It’s important to know that most gel candle supplies are different from regular candle supplies. Many of the dyes, fragrances, etc., used in regular candles will not work with gel candles. It’s also important to take safety precautions when working with gel, because overheating it can cause a dangerous fire.

Gel candle making kits

If you’re a beginner, this might be the best way to go, they make getting the right supplies easy – and the good ones will come with useful instructions.

Gel wax

Penreco™ holds the patent on gel wax, and this wax is usually better than it’s imitations. There are three different kinds:

CLP: A low-polymer gel for candles with a low amount of fragrance.
CMP: A medium-polymer gel for candles with medium fragrance.
CHP: A high-polymer gel for clear candles with medium- to high-fragrance loads (0-5%) and the capability to hold items, glitter, or embeds.

Wicks, dyes, and fragrances

It is important that you get these supplies that are made specifically made for gel candles, otherwise your candle making may go awry. When looking for dyes, make sure you get liquid dyes, these work best with gels, as waxy dyes can cloud your candle.

Once you get the right supplies, you’re on your way to an enjoyable hobby!
