Container Candles are Easy to Make
Everyone should have a container candle in their home. If you do not have a container candle in your home, then you need to purchase one or make your own. These candles are very highly scented and can fill your entire home with wonderful fragrances. They set the mood and atmosphere in your house and are very welcoming. The companies that sell container candles normally sell them in different sizes. The most popular size is the 16 oz., then the 14 oz. and down to the 8 oz. and 3 oz. candles. Most candle companies generally stick to this sizing of containers, but some vary according to their own candle pouring needs. The prices vary from approximately $18.00 for the largest down to $8.00 for the smallest. Most of the larger container candles have 2 wicks and sometimes 3 wicks, to give the candle an even burn. But the best way to have wonderfully scented and inexpensive container candles is to make them yourself. Candle making is fun and entertaining and you can use all kinds of containers right out of your own pantry.
Candle Making
There are all kinds of jars that can be used to make your container candles. Crocks, mugs and glassware are just a few examples of the items in your home that make wonderful container candles. Containers and jars that have wide necks are the best containers for these candles. You will need a melting pot or double boiler for the wax, a thermometer, pre-tabbed wicks, color block or liquid dye, scent, container wax, a pot for water, glass jars or crocks to pour the wax into, a stove or hot plate and a suitable work area. You are now ready to make your own scented container candles.
Prepare the double boiler and melt your wax, and be very careful not get any water into your mold or it will ruin your candle. The thermometer should be on the side of the boiler and when it reaches 180 degrees you are ready to add the color and scent. Use a grater to shave small amount of the color block into your wax. Stir the wax with the thermometer until the color is dissolved. Keep in mind that when wax is hardened, it will appear lighter in color than it is in the pot. Once you have your desired color, add your scent. Use 1 oz. of scent per pound of wax for highly scented candles.
Stir again with the thermometer, and attach the wick tab to the bottom center of the container with a hot glue gun. Pre-primed wick tabs are the best to use. Run hot water over the outside of your containers and then carefully pour your wax into the container. Gently tap the container for 45 seconds to release any air bubbles, and keep adjusting the wick to center it until the wax hardens. Top off your candle 4 to 6 hours after it cools to create a smooth surface. Allow your container candle to cool before covering it with a lid. Container candles make great gifts, because they are personal and can be used for any occasion. Any hobby store or online candle making store will have the supplies you need to create your own personal container candles.
